Lab Beneath Stark Industries, Sunday Afternoon

The War Machine armor had taken a significant enough hit in a fight that Rhodey wasn't able to patch it up on his own. Which was annoying on a few levels for Tony. One, that Rhodey could have gotten hurt. Another that Tony should have been there to help him.

Tony made a face, rereading the assessment of the damage for a third time before starting to get some tools together.

"JARVIS, has the lab in East Village been touched?"

"No, sir. Shall I inform Lieutenant colonel Rhodes of your plan?"

Tony grinned up at the ceiling. "You know me so well, sweetheart. Tell him I'll be there within the hour. Help him shake any tails if you'd be so kind."

And Tony was keeping a wary eye out for anyone who might be unsavory or want to, you know, turn him into the proper authorities.

"What's so ridiculous?"

Might want to shelf that conversation for now, boys. It would seem that a certain group was either on the look out for Stark or just got really lucky today. Because a certain snake themed villainess was here to knock you both out for some friendly kidnapping.

Really friendly.

Into the sewer.

Yeah, Bucky would have to forgive him for this bullshit. But, oddly enough, that wasn't Tony's first thought as he came, arms tied behind his back on the floor of a suspiciously spacious sewer.

New York. Go figure.

"...Barnes?" he whispered, trying to see in the dim light.

Bucky's head hurt. At first, there was nothing but blackness, and it didn't get much better even as he swam back to consciousness. But, his eyes blinked open.

"–– the hell?" he asked, weakly. Mostly addressing himself, really.

"Oh, thank god," Tony breathed, trying to shuffle closer to him. "Can you move?"

"A little?" Bucky offered, after checking. So, that was great. His head hurt and his arms were tied. "What the hell, Tony?"

Sure, now he went there.

"We'll get you out of here," Tony promised, giving himself the start of a headache as he strained to catch any wireless signal down here. "I promise."

"You shouldn't make promises you can't keep, Iron Man."

Hope you were expecting a chat with Madame Hydra today, boys. Because that's what was happening as the rest of the Serpent Society sort of fanned out around her, covering any potential escape routes.

Sorry not sorry.

Yeah, that was exactly what Bucky wanted to see while he was doing his best to feel whether he could somehow untie his arms.

Not.

"Who the hell is this?"

Creepy snake people. It was creepy snake people. Because Tony's life was awful.

"Madame Hydra," Tony said through gritted teeth. "Did we have an appointment? My assistant has been on leave."

Tony, why are you like this?

She glanced over at one of the ridiculously costumed people and then back at Tony to smile viciously as he was yanked up onto his feet by said ridiculously costumed individual with a hand on his throat.

"You should learn to hold your tongue unless you want to face the consequences."

"Hey!" Bucky snapped. From the floor.

Steve wasn't the only Brooklynite who couldn't always judge a situation for one where he should shut up for his own safety.

So much was explained about him there. So, so much.

Tony looked a little panicked as Madame Hydra turned her attention over onto Barnes. She was more Strucker's creature than Red Skull's, so he might not ring any bells? "James," he choked out really hoping he'd get the hint.

"Now isn't the time to play hero," she told Bucky, frowning a little as she tried to place the sense of recognition.

A flick of her hand had Stark dropped from Rattler's grip.

Yep. All snake themed names. Awesome.

Bucky had just been about to say "You should let us go!" when, well. Rattler let Tony go.

So he just kind of gave a gasp in sympathy instead.

She leaned in, reaching out to roughly hook her fingers under his chin. Which left him the choice between moving in an uncomfortable fashion or be stabbed with sharp fingernails.

"Pretty, aren't you?"

"Are you going to keep terrorizing my new assistant or will you get to why you kidnapped me?" Tony asked, trying not to move when he really wanted to body slam her before this got worse.

Bucky took the first option. Such fun to have to decide between two painful options, though. Such fun.

"Look, lady --" he muttered, but had no real end for that sentence. He'd half taken Tony's hint from before, now. Maybe he needed to temper his defiance a little.

"Your assistant," she said in a flat, disbelieving tone.

Lucky for him, she pulled her hand away from his chin. Unlucky for him, he was now digging her nails into his arm like she expected to hit metal.

Well, there wasn't any. Just flesh. Which was now hurting.

"Ow, what the hell?" Bucky snapped, because this trip was no officially the worst.

"Yes," Tony said, trying to act like he wasn't completely aware of why she might be doing that. He had some practice at that at least. "Don't you have better things to do right now? Like pick the wings off flies?"

Madame Hydra sneered, finally pulling away from Bucky in order to focus on Stark once again. "Rattler."

Hey, guess who was coldcocking Tony? This guy.

Well, thank god Tony had Extremis to keep from showing up back home with bruises. Not that Rhodey would be terribly happy about this.

"Was that insulting to snakes?" Tony wheezed, hunched over a little to blink the stars out of his vision. "I'm sorry. Culturally insensitive of me."

Bucky muttered something under his breath – look, he was learning! – while he tried to wriggle his way out of his restraints. Yes, he knew it was a long shot that he'd succeed, but what was he supposed to do? Give up.

Please.

Which would be why there was suddenly a foot shoving him down. By a guy who looked like a lizard fucked a sailboat, but you know it was a cool design to draw. So this is where we were.

"You are going to tell me who was behind the assassination and everything your little Widow has figured out," Madame Hydra said, leaning in to creepily run her fingernails down along the side of Stark's face.
