Lab Beneath Stark Industries, Sunday Afternoon

The War Machine armor had taken a significant enough hit in a fight that Rhodey wasn't able to patch it up on his own. Which was annoying on a few levels for Tony. One, that Rhodey could have gotten hurt. Another that Tony should have been there to help him.

Tony made a face, rereading the assessment of the damage for a third time before starting to get some tools together.

"JARVIS, has the lab in East Village been touched?"

"No, sir. Shall I inform Lieutenant colonel Rhodes of your plan?"

Tony grinned up at the ceiling. "You know me so well, sweetheart. Tell him I'll be there within the hour. Help him shake any tails if you'd be so kind."

Nothing was off at all! Other than the look that look Rhodey gave Tony that was purely 'only you could get in this situation'.

"Reaction time is off and I've tweaked it as much as I can without a complete overhaul," he said. Which he didn't have the equipment for outside one of Tony's labs.

"Let's run some diagnostics," Tony said with a forced cheer as he clapped hid hands together.

The War Machine armor twitched and opened up like Tony was checking under the hood of a car.

"Well, we've lost him for the next three hours," Rhodey said to Barnes dryly.

"He do this kind of thing often?" Bucky asked.

Not even specifying. Rhodey could take that however he wanted to.

"Get distracted by tech or run blindly into danger?" Rhodey asked, glancing down at the bandage for only a second. "Nevermind, the answer is yes to both of them."

He said with love. And annoyance. And worry.

Bucky sighed, and brought his hand up to scratch the back of his neck. "I think he'd be better at explaining it," he admitted. "But, we ended up in the sewers. Kidnapped. There were lizard people."

He glanced at Tony, then back at Rhodey.

"And some delightful dame by the name of Madame... something?" he offered, then nodded at the bandage. "She got a little too familiar with my arm, so maybe I should've paid more attention to the name."

Well, it couldn't be Masque then because Tony wasn't drinking or being maudlin at Rhodey. Which. Thank god for that.

"Welcome to the world orbiting the Avengers," Rhodey said, giving the arm bandage another long look. "You're from that island he's been on?"

"Guess so," Bucky replied as he dropped his hand again. "I'd say I'm from Brooklyn, but lookin' from here... I think Fandom's more accurate."

Rhodey snorted in amusement, nodding along with that. "What year are you from?" he asked before sighing and shaking his head. "That wasn't a question I thought I'd need to ask someone, you know."

Bucky's littele exhale of a chuckle and the little shake of his head suggested that it wasn't a question he'd much expected to have to answer, either. "Nineteen forty."

Rhodey cocked his head to the side, doing the math on what he knew of James Buchanan Barnes and coming up with a ???? as his answer. But he recovered quickly.

That's what happens when you've just accepted that your best friend's AI might give you a call to beat someone up once said best friend is removed from the timeline because of science.

"Hopefully Tony isn't giving you too bad an idea of what technology is actually like now. He gets... a little over excited."

He said this while the man in question was making sad, soothing noises at the armor as he worked.

Nothing was going to make sense when you mixed universes, Rhodey. It really was best just to go with it.

"Dunno about that, really," Bucky replied with a shrug. "But it is all pretty interesting."
